During my time in science we studied 5 topics. Which, as our last assignment were supposed to talk about our favorite topic.
For Astronomy I thought the Black Holes was the coolest part. I thought it was cool that an hour would go by, with a year a little ways away.
For the weather and climate, I like the atmosphere the best. You got to draw and make a picture of the atmosphere layers.
I liked the volcanoes the best of the Geology. They are really cool, and make the coolest/hottest rocks.
For the water and erosion, I liked the podcast/movie/chubbathingy the best. I got to work on the computer on an old town I used to live in.
For earths water I liked the tracing we did of Colorado Spring's water. It was neat.

Journey to the Colorado Springs

The water comes down in this exact order:
1. What major companies are using solar power.
What conclusions did you come to? What do you recommend average citizens do to make a difference?
There are more farms in the southern U.S. than all of Germany put together.
Average citizens should try the best they can to conserve energy, and use solar panels.
What would happen if, worst-case scenario, nobody listened to your recommendations?
The earth would eventually run out of natural fuels and the earth would decay quickly because there is nothing to cook with or harvest stuff.
What would happen if, best-case scenario, everybody listened to your recommendations?
The world would be able to last a lot longer, because there isn't much use of natural gas, the world would be able to run on no fuel. It sits right upon the Arizona & Nevada border. If you did come here, you might be a tourist, because it is world famous. It is so famous, in fact, that the Chinese are starting to build one just like it. There would be a lot of car noises at the Hoover Dam because you can drive across the top of it. Off to one side is a huge hole that was used to redirect the Colorado River when they were first constructing the dam.
There is a large amount of water held back by this immense structure. It used so much concrete that it could have been used to make a whole city. There are a bunch of animals and plants around the area. You have lizards, snakes and such other things as you would find in the desert. This place shows how much water the earth may have. During the 1980's there was an all time high that was 100ft above average. Then later in 2005, the water was at an all time low. The people here use the water to power electricity all the way to California.

Top two pictures are the Hoover Dam. The one behind the dam is a huge hole in the side of the mountain, beside it.

Fact: The Hoover Dam was used to tame the Colorado. It backed up the water so fast that it started to cause human made earthquakes!

Webquest

Earthquakes tend to happen around plate boundaries.
Because plates tend to slide past each it makes an earthquake.
The area where the plates meet that cause earthquakes is called the Ring of Fire.
The closest earthquake to Manitou (current position) was a 3.2 magnitude on the Richter Scale. Found about 134 miles, 310 degrees North West of Denver, Colorado. It was felt atop Hahns Peak, in Wyoming. The energy was about 1,000 times more energy than a magnitude one earthquake.

An earthquake in Minahasa, Sulawesi, Indonesia had a Richter of 5.1 at Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 12:06:56 PM at epicenter, about Monday, January 19, 2009 at 09:06:56 PM with Mountain Time Zone. Epicenter was located about 48.5 (78 km) miles below the surface. About 125 miles (200km) North East of Palu, Sulawesi, Indonesia. It helps protect living things on earth from dangerous Ultra Violet Radiation. The ozone is not healthy do breath in at or altitude in the troposphere. There is a big hole in the Ozone caused by the burning of fossil fuels, such as power plants. There is a lot that we can do, for example you can ride a bus or ride your bike to work. Many people don't think about it at all, because it isn't effecting them, well not yet any way. If you think a bout it you can do alot to help the earth from the Uv rays.

Acid Rain

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xne7GYGvDH0/SRMR_T2bzII/AAAAAAAAAD4/Y5iElN5puYY/s200/acidr.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5265572168684260482" />
Acid rain is rain that has more acid than usual in the drop. It causes trees to loose their "Needles". Sulfur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxides help this out. Also with vegetation decay, volcanic eruptions, and sea spray. Most of the acid rain is from burning of fossil fuels. Doesn't just happen in rain, also known as "acid precipitation". The more acid in our water makes it so we can't drink it. It kills the trees like the blue spruce.

Here is a link to the website that gives a lot more information.
http://www.enviroliteracy.org/article.php/2.html

The Atmosphere

The four elements fire, water, earth, and air are needed to have living things. The rockets were usually 58 meters high and has three stages for getting into space. Now, during the present day, they are used in commercial or gov't use. For example, the military has a probe that takes pictures of different parts of the world. Even Google Maps has a probe, see for your self and zoom out until you see all the countries.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration was started in 1958. There mission was to explore space. They found out that humans could survive in space. They learned how to maneuver aircraft around in space, and orbit. Apollo 13 looked like a really smooth flight for the rest of NASA, but then an oxygen tank blew. Everyone survived but they were loosing power, electricity, light, and water. After that, they had three Apollo missions, but none of them had humans on board.
Now, the NASA program has a Personal Assistant Robot, it floats next to the astronauts and takes temperature, and pressure checks. It is installed with a video phone so they can talk with other astronauts and NASA.
NASA says that there will be a seven dollar increase for every dollar they spend on the program. Some people think it is a really good idea, others think it is a waste and could be used for education or medical study.

Presentaion for Science

Gizmo

While working on the Gizmo I noticed that the Sun doesn't always appear in the south or north poles. The sun causes our seasons, winter, spring, fall, and summer, due to the tilt of our earth. The southern hemisphere in the summer for us, is really Winter to them. In the winter for us it is summer down there. Why? Because they have more direct sunlight in the winter that we have. people at first thought it was the distance between earth and the sun. The way earth revolves around the sun is kind of oval like. During fall, it is spring in the Southern hemisphere if you are in the Northern hemisphere.

Earth with rotation and revolution.
Get a Voki now!

Zoom

The book Zoom started with one picture, zooming out little by little, making what you looked at what you thought it was, change.
While looking at the book Zoom, you make inferences on what you are looking. On each frame you might have changed your inference. Each frame it looked like something else. Inference after inference occurred until the last few frames where they were the same.
My perspective of the whole thing was made easy after the first ten pages. It kept getting farther out giving me the idea. It was going to end in space. After each frame my inferences got more accurate.
The data I gathered was probably most wanted by the author of the book zoom. He might want the inferences to make the next book. Which might have given him the idea to make the next book, Re:zoom. That is how i think he wrote the second book.

Enigma Box

Scientists use inferences to find out what is happening. Same with predictions, and hypothesizes. You can give a hypothesis to what you think is inside the Enigma box. I gave a hypothesis in the paragraph above.

When Mrs. Casey poured a certain Amount of water into the box, water came out a hose on the outside. People thought it was like a coffee filter. Or worked like a toilet. In the small box it took 470 ml. In the larger one it took 1800 ml.

I think inside the box was a slightly buoyant weight. Which with enough water would raise and unplug the hose. Letting the water out. And the water would have enough vacuum to pull the rest of the water out. Filling up the bucket or tub.

Inside the box was a tube that would go up and loop around inside the box. When the water would reach the top of the loop it pours out the end of the hose. While going down it pushes air out and pulls water in. If you filled up the box high enough it would be the same height in the tube.
